GridSmart is a practical, cost-effective alternative to traditional detection technologies such as inductive loops or other multi-camera video solutions.
Product
GridSmart™ communicates with NEMA TS1, TS2, Type 170E and 2070 traffic controllers for almost universal deployment. The existing infrastructure for powering and supervising traffic signals remains in place but now benefits from reliable, non-intrusive, vehicle detection. Additionally, GridSmart™ provides a rich set of traffic data for use in intersection planning and road management. The user friendly GridSmart software interface allows the user to define multiple vehicle detection zones (stopbar, advance detection, etc) in and around the intersection for real time calls to the traffic controller.
GridSmart is designed using advanced omni-directional vehicle tracking algorithms along with three-dimensional vehicle modeling to provide accurate and reliable stop-bar and system detection, while also enabling advanced data collection options such as vehicle counts, classification, average speed and more. Providing interfaces to almost all types of controllers, and making traffic data available in a standard UTDF-compliant (csv) format, GridSmart is easily interfaced to other third party products and peripherals. The GridSmart software is designed to allow access both locally and remotely through a secure network connection. The software provides access to all of the GridSmart features and can easily be adapted to intersection changes.

San Leandro, California
San Leandro has deployed GridSmart at one of its busiest intersections, Halcyon and Washington. Installed and operational within just over three (3) hours, the system is providing both stop-bar detection and traffic data. Steve Lolas, with the City's Department of Public Works, comments, “We decided to choose Gridsmart for our detection for many reasons. The ease of set up and use, especially for the end user, is remarkable. And the difference in total cost of ownership was significant…especially in these times where we are being asked to do more with less. We were using 4 cameras from our prior vendor in order to provide detection for this busy intersection, where GridSmart was able to provide coverage with only one camera. Last but not least, we have tremendous support by Western Pacific Signal."

Westminster, Colorado

Westminster Colorado recently deployed a two-camera GridSmart system at 92nd Street and Harlan Avenue to fully actuate this intersection. Sold by Intermountain Traffic, Aldis' authorized distributor in Colorado, this fully networked intersection allows for remote viewing and management of GridSmart from the City's Traffic Management Center. City officials can watch video, gather traffic data and monitor performance from the comfort of their office. The diverse weather in Colorado has offered numerous challenges for traditional video detection systems be it snow, wind or rain. GridSmart is working great and efficiently managing traffic in all of these conditions. -
West Valley City, Utah
West Valley City borders Salt Lake City and is the second largest city in Utah with over 100,000 residents. The existing loops at a major intersection were not performing well and were disabled. Sold by Intermountain Traffic, authorized distributor of GridSmart in Utah, GridSmart was fully actuating the intersection shortly thereafter. The installation took less than two hours and did not require a single lane of traffic to be closed. GridSmart is not only being used for stop-bar detection at the intersection; it is also being used for advance detection purposes. The City's Transportation Engineer loves the data collection features and has received nothing but positive feedback on the GridSmart system.

Greeley, Colorado
Home to scenic Northern Colorado College, the city of Greeley deployed GridSmart at one of the busiest locations in the city. This two camera system is installed directly in front of the University, which has enrollment well over 10,000 students. When classes let out, considerable pedestrian traffic coupled with tremendous vehicular traffic led city officials to work with Intermountain Traffic, authorized GridSmart distributor for Colorado, to try something new. Since the installation of GridSmart, congestion from both pedestrian and motorist traffic has been drastically reduced and city officials, residents and students have seen a dramatic change for the better.

Jerome, Idaho

View from GridSmart camera in Jerome, Idaho.
The City of Jerome, Idaho has utilized GridSmart for over a year. Prior to deployment by Intermountain Traffic, a traditional video detection system was used to actuate this signal, which sits directly outside of a dairy farm. Large concentrations of truck traffic would continually cast false calls in the late afternoon due to shadows and positioning of the sun. The Public Works Department would receive countless calls each week from angry motorists stuck at the signal. Since installation of GridSmart, Jerome has not received one complaint from motorists regarding signal delay and credits GridSmart for this. -
Sevierville, Tennessee
With 13 million tourists passing through Sevierville on an annual basis, a road widening effort was initiated to expand Highway 66 from four to six lanes to add more capacity. With the construction and lane shifts, the loops were being destroyed or were not in the proper location, requiring police officers to manage the intersections for five (5) days out of the week due to the tourist traffic.
GridSmart was quickly deployed, providing detection during and post- construction. Police overtime associated with traffic management was reduced by 80%, and the 10-year total cost of ownership savings is estimated at over $125,000. The City continues to expand its utilization of GridSmart.
